We are now free to move about the country

We have successfully completed our first 3 months of service as Peace Corps Volunteers. The Peace Corps calls this first stage “Community Entry.” It is a time for forming relationships, figuring out daily routines, and establishing credibility with potential work counterparts. It is also a time that Peace Corps restricts you to your district. Now that we have completed this entry period, we are free to travel to other parts of Zambia and Africa. There were of course high and low points of community entry, but now that we have finished, it is hard to believe it’s already time for more training in Lusaka.




Since our last post, we celebrated Joy’s birthday numerous times (Joey even made a bush shower that is awesome as a birthday surprise), we finally established an action plan for our second structure, and we learned how to make pancake bread (pure accident). Joey has been making a lot of progress with his conservation farming (CF) project. He held the first of his CF farmer training sessions. He is also working with the local school to start a CF field, and making informative presentations with local headman. Joy has been busy too. She will hold her first adult literacy class on Monday. She has also been assisting with the preschool program and exchanging ideas with the local teacher. A guidance and counseling program has also started at the school which Joy will help supervise. Next week is the last week of the school term before August holiday. There will be a zonal sports program consisting of track, netball (similar to basketball, primarily played by women), soccer, and volleyball. Joe and I are looking forward to cheering for our school!

This experience continues to push us everyday, but we are very happy and are learning so much about what you really need in life. It is amazing how little that is.
